Makes you wonder if it never was the environment’s fault; maybe it’s you who has been the problem all along.
Creating music has never been a want, but always a need, for 21-year-old Tilda Bergkvist - famously known as T & the Rex. Her lyrics revolve around large emotions and reflections about our contemporary world. By turning her mundane experiences into abstract illustrations, T & the Rex creates music that is meant for the listener to experience and interpret. Songwriting has always been Tilda’s way to handle her emotional tornados, and in her early teens she wrote music every day. Growing up in Oskarshamn, Tilda wanted to capture the unfiltered narrative of a young girl from small town Sweden. When discovering the works of Lana Del Rey, Marina (and the Diamonds), and Melanie Martinez, Tilda began to understand the real art of songwriting. Her idol’s ability to express deep and universal emotions through made up characters and commonplace situations amazed her, and that’s how T & the Rex was born. In the summer of 2019, T & the Rex released her self-made debut EP ‘T & the Rex’. Through the eyes of a 16-year-old, the record’s five tracks cover heartbreak, tragedy, and hopelessness. In 2020, after a study abroad in Michigan - US, Tilda decided it was time to make an album. She started working with the artist development program ‘Talentcoach’ at the same time, getting helpful insights about the music industry. T & the Rex’s debut album ‘Dream Less Dreamless’ was released May 2021. 12 tracks written, produced, mixed, and mastered by then 18-year-old Tilda Bergkvist. The years following the release of Dream Less Dreamless, T & theRex gained local and national attention. Over the past three years, her album has been “One of this year’s best Swedish albums”, she has performed at festivals as ‘The Great Escape’, ‘Live at Heart’ and ‘Stockholm Pride’ and signed with label Bark at Your Owner. T & the Rex’s sophomore album ‘Chaos Killed the Dinosaurs’, created together with producer MadeByFredrik, is set to be released spring 2024. Inspired by Tilda’s first years living in Gothenburg and her studies in political science, Chaos Killed the Dinosaurs is an album about the implications of femininity and the complexity of being in a love-hate relationship with oneself.
